Wednesday Season 3 might still be a distant premonition for now, but it’s already shaping up to be a potentially transformative installment. The modern take on the Addams Family was an undeniable hit for Netflix, transplanting the beloved character of Wednesday Addams to Nevermore Academy, a school for kids with supernatural abilities. However, Season 3 is setting up a major change to the show’s format.
In a recent interview with Esquire, lead actress Jenna Ortega confirmed that Wednesday will be a senior at Nevermore in Season 3. Each season thus far has corresponded to roughly one academic school year, and Season 3 appears to be continuing that format. However, it raises the question of whether Wednesday will end with her time at Nevermore or continue to follow her beyond high school.
Jenna Ortega Teases Wednesday’s Final Year at Nevermore
Despite the previous revelation that Wednesday Season 3 will take place in Paris as Wednesday searches for her werewolf friend, Enid Sinclair, many expected the show to return to Nevermore before the season was over. Ortega’s comments suggest that this will be the case, and it could be the last time viewers see Wednesday as a Nevermore student.
Wednesday‘s timeline can be rather confusing to follow, but its academic year format has been straightforward enough. With Season 3 putting Wednesday in her final year at Nevermore, the structure could change dramatically, depending on what she decides to do after school. Even if the creative team extends her senior year beyond the end of Season 3, this would still be a significant shift from the show’s usual format.
The Addams Family was a pop culture fixture long before Nevermore Academy, so it’s more than plausible that the series will outlive the title character’s time at the school. That said, Nevermore has been such an iconic setting for Wednesday that it’s strange to think that the show could move away from it completely. Of course, Pugsley is still a student, and Wednesday could visit him at school after she graduates, but the circumstances will be different.
Wednesday Could Look Quite Different After Season 3
Whether Wednesday even gets a fourth season remains to be seen. Plenty of streaming shows before it have ended with three, and her high school graduation does present a natural stopping point for the story. On top of that, Wednesday Season 2 didn’t quite match Season 1’s record-breaking viewership, which is a worrying sign for Netflix originals.
That said, Wednesday is still one of Netflix’s most popular series of all time, with both seasons making the streamer’s list of top ten most watched TV shows. There’s also a spinoff series focused on Uncle Fester in the works. If both Season 3 and the spinoff can live up to the streamer’s high expectations, Wednesday could very well get four or even more seasons.
Wednesday‘s third season might already be setting up a change of scenery through its detour to Paris. This will be the show’s first major plotline outside Nevermore and the surrounding area, allowing Netflix to gauge how well it performs outside its usual dark academia setting. Additionally, Fester’s spinoff could serve a similar purpose, since it will probably not be set at Nevermore either.
Netflix could also give fans their Nevermore fix by creating another Wednesday spinoff following Pugsley after his sister graduates or perhaps a prequel starring Morticia and Gomez during their school days. The former could function as a companion story to the main show, while the latter would allow the creative team to bring back some of the couple’s fan-favorite classmates, such as Larissa Weems and Isaac Night.
Ultimately, Wednesday will have to alter its format if it’s going to continue past Season 3. Nevermore might be a fun environment for the Addams children, but kids don’t stay in school forever. Whatever’s next for Wednesday Addams, she’s certainly a strong enough lead for fans to follow wherever she goes, and there’s always a chance she could find herself back at her alma mater in a different capacity.
Wednesday Season 3 is expected to premiere in 2027.
