Martial arts icon and Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh gives John Wick a medical twist in an all-new, all-original action thriller that, after being hailed as one of the best movies of the year, has now been picked up for release. The genre effort gives Yeoh the opportunity to once again demonstrate her particular set of skills in what’s been described as a mash-up that combines the exploits of Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga with the smash hit HBO medical drama The Pitt. Evidently, it’s a combination that’s been stitched together to perfection.
Michelle Yeoh takes the lead in The Surgeon as a gifted doctor who steps down after an accomplished career, only to return to the operating room at gunpoint. In her newfound retirement, she is abducted by a criminal gang (led by Martin Freeman) that forces her to work on a member with a life-threatening medical condition. However, thanks to her years as a surgeon, she is uniquely skilled with a scalpel, fighting back and proving she’s just as capable of inflicting pain as she is healing it. And all to a “fast-paced, pulse-pounding, Thin Lizzy-infused soundtrack,” no less.
While no trailer has been released as yet, The Surgeon has now taken a major step forward after being picked up by Sony Pictures. Produced by Thunder Road (the studio behind the John Wick franchise) and Tango, Sony has now acquired the rights to the unique action thriller for North American distribution, as well as Latin America, Italy, China and Hong Kong (via Deadline).

Sony was reportedly eager to add The Surgeon to its release roster and put in multiple bids. And it’s no mystery why, with The Surgeon now boasting a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Roshan Sethi, best known for the 2025 romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy and being the co-creator behind the Fox medical series The Resident, as well as being a radiation oncologist himself, critics have heaped praise on Michelle Yeoh. One critic relished the sight of the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star carving up “dozens of baddies in this fast-paced action flick,” while another added she’s “having more fun here than she’s had on screen in years, and it’s catching.”
Elsewhere, the action thriller has been described as a “metaphorical defibrillator for those in need of a good shock,” a “pulpy channel-surfing Hollywood action thriller,” and a “genre-bending swirl that is part The Pitt (but gorier), part tense crime thriller, part action movie and part midnight movie.” That first trailer can’t come soon enough.
