NYPD Rescues Woman From The Brooklyn Bridge
According to the NYPD, an emergency crew responded to reports of a woman in distress just after 7:30 p.m.
Body-cam footage captured a woman sitting on the bridge ledge. The footage may be disturbing for some viewers.
As an NYPD officer suspended by a cable approached the woman on the bridge, he spoke to her, offering help.
“My name is Chris. What’s your name?” he said to the woman. “What’s happening today? I just want to talk. I want to help you. That’s why I’m up here right now. I genuinely care. I do.”
The officer also begged the woman not to jump off the bridge and to accept his help.
”It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” he added. “It really is. I don’t know what you’re going through, but I want to understand. We have services we can get you to. The strongest thing you can do right now is accept help. I promise you, that’s the strongest thing you can do.”
NYPD Officer Talked To The Woman For One Hour Before the Rescue
The officer reportedly talked to the woman for almost an hour before the rescue as he waited for a moment to pull her away from the ledge.
“NYPD ESU officers climbed onto the Brooklyn Bridge to reach a woman in crisis who was threatening to jump,” read a statement from Police 1. “For nearly an hour, they stayed with her, spoke with her, and waited for the moment they could safely pull her back from the edge.”
After it got dark, several rescuers made their way to the woman as she clutched onto the bridge with one arm. It appeared as though she was about to let go just as they reached her, and one officer quickly wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her in.
”Don’t do it,” he exclaimed. “Don’t do it, please. I got you. You’re OK. Everything’s going to be OK. You’re not in trouble.”
Text over the body cam footage read, “After nearly an hour of conversation, officers were able to take the person off the bridge.”
