A pair of Power Rangers icons have reunited for an original, seriously low-budget action thriller that’s now streaming on
Prime Video before heading to for free soon. Already sweeping the awards circuit, and hailed as a gloriously violent, gritty, action-packed, and uniquely strange vigilante thriller, the movie follows a detective on the hunt for a masked crimefighter who finds himself drawn into the underworld when his daughter goes missing.
Reportedly made for a shoestring budget of just $300, Power Rangers actor Johnny Yong Bosch, best known for playing the second Black Power Ranger, Adam Park, in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise, wrote, directed, and stars in the action thriller Spades. And it’s an action thriller that’s surely destined for streaming success. Filmed on an iPhone, the indie production reportedly used a crowdfunding campaign to raise around $30,000 for post-production purposes, with the former Ranger swapping one mask for another as he delivers a violent vigilante worthy of The Punisher.
Johnny Yong Bosch reunites with his fellow Power Rangers star Jason Narvy, who played Eugene “Skull” Skullovitch in the beloved series, for Spades, with Narvy leading the picture as Detective James Bishop, a veteran haunted by combat trauma trying to claw his way back to normal life.
But when a series of brutal vigilante murders grips the city, with each crime scene bearing the same chilling skull-branded spades playing card. When Bishop’s daughter disappears, he uncovers a trafficking ring tied to both the killings and his own fractured past as he’s forced into a deadly confrontation where justice and vengeance collide.
Spades is not the first time Johnny Yong Bosch and Jason Narvy have joined forces to deliver action thrills, with the pair having also starred in the likes of Ark Exitus and Extreme Heist. But Spades may be their best effort yet, with the movie having already won Best Indie Feature at the Los Angeles Film Awards and Best Action Film at both the New York International Film Awards and the Hollywood International Indie Film & Screenplay Awards.
The reactions, meanwhile, tease an indie actioner with a twist that’s well worth checking out. A one-two punch of four-star reviews on Letterboxd hails Spades as “Violent, gritty, action-packed, and, despite a tiny budget, very well made,” and “a great indie vigilante action movie with a supernatural twist.” Spades is now available on Prime Video, with Bosch himself revealing that the action thriller will be available to watch for free on YouTube starting August 8, 2026.
