The Las Vegas Raiders are off to a 3-1 start in the 2026 NFL season as they prepare to face the New England Patriots on Sunday, but the team’s history is filled with stories that go far beyond the scoreboard. One of its most remarkable belongs to Jim Plunkett, the former Raiders quarterback who went from growing up in modest circumstances with two blind parents to winning two Super Bowls. His parents found ways to support their son despite being unable to see him play, making Plunkett’s journey to NFL glory a story of perseverance, family and a bond that went far beyond football.

In a recent interview with NBC Bay Area for a Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight, the 78-year-old Northern California native looked back on his journey to becoming an NFL star. Plunkett grew up in a working-class family with parents who were both blind. His father, a newspaper vendor, and his mother faced significant challenges, but their determination helped shape the quarterback’s outlook on life and develop the grit he would need to find success in the NFL.
Plunkett’s parents’ support was unwavering, and their presence in the stands at his football games, where they would listen to the crowd, made his eventual success even more meaningful. Plunkett’s rise to becoming a household name is more than just a rags-to-riches story; it’s the story of a family and community who never stopped believing he could reach the pinnacle of professional football.

With the support of his family behind him, Jim Plunkett attended Stanford University, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1970 and becoming the first Latino player to receive college football’s most coveted individual prize.
Selected first overall in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Plunkett spent five challenging seasons in New England and a short stint with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Oakland Raiders in 1978. Signed as a backup, Plunkett got a chance to shine in 1980 when starting quarterback Dan Pastorini was injured. Plunkett led the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XV, earning MVP honors, then helped the team win another Super Bowl championship in 1984, turning his journey in the National Football League into one of the greatest comeback stories in league history.
The Raiders face Plunkett’s former team, the New England Patriots, today. With their best start to a season since 2021, the Silver and Black are poised for a season to remember, giving fans a reason to look back at a Raiders icon who continues to inspire more than 40 years later.
