Marvel Studios is gearing up for the highly anticipated release of Avengers: Doomsday, the MCU’s fifth Avengers film, this December. Directed by MCU veterans Joe and Anthony Russo, this movie will center around Robert Downey Jr. in his return to the MCU, taking on the role of Doctor Doom after 11 years of playing Tony Stark/Iron Man. He will be joined by over two dozen MCU stars and legacy Marvel icons from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies, and more are expected to join the madness by the time the movie is released.
One pairing many fans hope to see in this movie is Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, after they took the Marvel world by storm together in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. This movie grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, and it earned rave reviews from critics and fans. This has led to a call for Reynolds and Jackman to be in Avengers: Doomsday, which would allow them to join over half a dozen other X-Men stars from past movies. While this has not come to be yet, the two may have laid the foundation for their potential return in a recent video.
During the Marvel portion of Disney’s massive Friday night presentation at the 2026 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Wolverine star Hugh Jackman came in with a surprise video for those in attendance. Jackman’s co-star Ryan Reynolds later shared the 73-second video on his X account after fan videos of it began to leak online. While Reynolds argued with Jackman about making the video, Jackman asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige if he needed any help “rounding out the cast” of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.
From here, Jackman tried to explain to Reynolds that there are already 28 stars confirmed for this movie and asked, “Why the hell would they need us?” Reynolds called them “the golden ones” and “special” before urging him to continue, before Jackman told Feige he would “love to join” and “might be able to convince Ryan to appear” in the movie as well.
While their R-rated antics would have to be toned down, Reynolds and Jackman being featured for even a few moments would drive excitement through the proverbial roof for much of the fandom. The two have enjoyed such long and successful runs as these characters, and after seeing them interact with Johnny Storm, Elektra, Blade, and Gambit in the last movie, the next natural step seems to be putting them alongside the rest of the X-Men and the Avengers.
The two unkillable mutants could still end up being one of Doomsday‘s many expected surprises, as Marvel is sure to have more than a few secrets to reveal when the movie is released in full. While they are sure to stay mum about their potential roles, their marketing prowess should only continue to build anticipation for them to join the mayhem.
Avengers: Doomsday will debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
