It took 25 years for the Wayans brothers to return to the Scary Movie franchise, which itself has experienced a 13-year dry spell since the release of the previous installment. It was worth the long wait because the sixth Scary Movie was overwhelmingly well-received — it garnered a 64% audience approval rating from over 5,000 users on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel was also a resounding financial success, grossing $230 million globally against its $30-million budget. Scary Movie 6 parodied modern horror’s most iconic (and memeable) moments, all of which can soon be rewatched ad nauseam on streaming.
2026’s Scary Movie, or Scary Movie 6, is set to hit Paramount+ on Sep. 3, offering fans unlimited opportunities to relive the thrills at their leisure and from the comfort of home. The sequel launches on streaming three months after its theatrical debut, which set a franchise record with its $54-million opening gross. Nostalgia for the film series, coupled with a historic return of the original ensemble, fueled the huge turnout, taking the sequel well past the break-even point and into profit territory after only four days in theaters.
The film features returning cast leads Marlon and Shawn Wayans, as well as Anna Faris and Regina Hall, who both reprised their roles after neither appeared in Scary Movie 5. Scary Movie 6 marked the Wayans brothers’ return to the series since the release of Scary Movie 2, when they parted ways with the franchise amid disputes with executive producer and Dimension Films founder Bob Weinstein.
Marlon Wayans revealed in a 2024 interview that they did not receive the promised $30 million script deal for Scary Movie 3 but were offered the same deal they got for the first Scary Movie instead. He said they felt “three times outraged” knowing the first movie’s box-office success and considering that they got a good deal for Scary Movie 2. Scary Movie 3, 4, and 5 were handed over to new directors (Keenan Ivory Wayans helmed the first two films) and screenwriters Craig Mazin, Pat Proft, David Zucker, and Jim Abrahams.
Wayans titled the sixth installment Scary Movie without affixing a sequel number, labeling the film as a “rebootquel” that went above and beyond previous attempts to parody pop culture. The new Scary Movie poked fun at cancel culture and safe spaces, on top of the usual horror tropes. The sequel still followed the throughline of the film series, which centered on a parody of Scream‘s Ghostface as the main antagonist, but also took shots at more recent movies like M3GAN, Get Out, Longlegs, Weapons, and Sinners.
Marlon Wayans teased plans for a potential Scary Movie 7 during the premiere of Scary Movie 6, naming two horror hits the sequel would spoof — Backrooms and Obsession. With a handful of new horror films already lined up like Clayface, Resident Evil, Werwulf, and They Follow, the Wayans should have more spoof material for Scary Movie 7.
