Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s latest adventure is officially coming to an end. A new first look at Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact #5 teases an epic finale for the sci-fi series.
IDW Publishing shared a preview of Lost Contact‘s finale, which went on sale on August 26. It brings the miniseries to its end, wrapping up the adventures of Caleb, Genesis, Jay-Den, Lyle, and Tarima as they use everything they’ve learned from Starfleet Academy to make it off the mysterious planet they’ve been stranded on. Based on the popular Paramount series, Lost Contact first debuted back in April, and readers are finally set to get some closure.
Star Trek’s Starfleet Academy Fights to Return to the U.S.S. Athena in New First Look
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact #5 is written by Layne Morgan and features art by Coralí Espuna. Ahead of the finale issue’s release, IDW shared previews of the interior art as well as a solicitation that teases the major headaches that Genesis Lythe finds herself dealing with on Starfleet Academy‘s final mission.
“Genesis Lythe screwed up. When she took charge of a planetary survey simulation exercise on an alien planet, she didn’t know she’d be forced to contend with tech-worshiping aliens silencing her and her teammates who refuse to work together — nor that her teachers wouldn’t be there as a safety net,” it reads.
As the group fights for survival, there might be some small hope they will make it out alive. “Now, one of her best friends is injured, and despite Chancellor Kelrec’s presence, the group is no closer to returning to the safety of the U.S.S. Athena. But there may be a way to turn it all around if only Genesis can trust her team. School is in session, and she intends for everyone to make it out with full marks.”
In the opening pages of the issue, the group of Starfleet Academy students on S’Eekay II discusses how to preserve their remaining oxygen while also trying to avoid a conflict with the planet’s inhabitants. There’s also the pressing matter of time, with Holly Hunter’s Nahla Ake revealing to the group she sent an emergency signal to Starfleet that they were in distress if they didn’t return in one hour.
The sneak peek ends on a cliffhanger, with the cadets arriving at the Clang-Pops’ base and giving them some of their spare O2 as a gesture of good faith — despite the fact that the aliens seem to have no idea how to use it. Getting off the planet on time looks like it will be quite an uphill battle.

Starfleet Academy’s Latest Adventures Have Been Full of Alien Drama
Since it dropped its first issue back in April, Lost Contact has been testing the Federation’s best like never before. When a simple mission to survey a lifeless, low-oxygen planet ends with a huge storm cutting off contact with their teachers onboard the Athena, the young students make contact with an alien, setting the entire saga in motion.
Over the last few months, the Starfleet Academy story has seen the group trapped on the planet, with a mysterious force field preventing them from beaming out, and to make matters worse, they’ve lost the ability to speak to one another, too. Last month’s penultimate issue ended with bloodshed as the aliens returned to finish what they started…and readers will have to tune into the fifth issue to see if the group’s first mission ends up being their last.
