The Elder Scrolls is inarguably one of the most iconic and legendary franchises in the history of the RPG genre. That reputation has been built up over the years thanks to brilliant release after brilliant release. Whether you’re a fan of the eerie charms of Morrowind or the immensely moddable, more modern experience of Skyrim, there’s an adventure out there for everyone willing to put the time into exploring them.
That’s said, it has somehow been almost fifteen years since the release of Skyrim, and we still haven’t seen anything of what Bethesda has coming up next for the series. The sixth mainline entry is definitely coming at some point, but we don’t know what it will be about, or even where in Tamriel it’s going to be set. That reality is difficult to contend with, and a recent anniversary has put the whole thing into perspective.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post in which they brought to everyone’s attention the startling realization that it has somehow been eight years since Todd Howard took to the stage at E3 to confirm that The Elder Scrolls VI was on the way. We’ve obviously learned a lot since then, not least that he regrets doing it anywhere near as early as he did, but it doesn’t make it any better that we still haven’t heard anything.
As you might expect, the comments were filled with fans lamenting the situation, and hoping for a change in the game’s status in the near future.
“Unfortunately, they probably don’t remember this anniversary. It would be funny if they did though. Still hoping for a crumb of a whisper of knowledge on the 28th though,” one comment read.
“Dude it’s so far overdue but it’s so nice to know it’s at least the main thing being worked on right now. Spending like 10 plus years knowing it wasn’t was so depressing,” another added, under a separate post.
While others were more practical, with one saying, “Yeah, probably not a big deal internally. They were talking about it before this internally, and then made a whole other game, and now they’re working on this game. Actual production deadlines are likely far more relevant to them at this point.”
If one thing is for certain, it’s that when The Elder Scrolls VI does release, it has to deliver on almost every front, for a player base and community that really has been immeasurably patient.
