Sit back and go on a wild ride with Maximum Overdrive
Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of our day and age. Over his career, he has written over 70 books and 200 short stories. Many of these stories have been adapted and turned into critically acclaimed movies and series, such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, It, The Green Mile, 11.22.63, and many more. However, not all Stephen King adaptations were popular among critics or the general public, and Maximum Overdrive is among them. Despite its box office failure, it has become somewhat of a cult classic. The shenanigans shown on screen have a special B-movie charm to them.
Maximum Overdrive is a particularly important piece of work for Stephen King fans. Not only is it based on his short story Trucks (part of the Night Shift collection), with a script penned by King himself, but it’s also the author’s only attempt at directing a film. In Maximum Overdrive, machines become sentient and go on a killing spree, targeting all humans. In its 98-minute runtime, viewers witness a series of over-the-top death scenes caused by all sorts of machines to the sound of AC/DC. Much of it is delightfully ridiculous, with campy, B-movie vibes. King fans know that his work has a distinctive flair to it that makes it unique, and it’s very evident in Maximum Overdrive.
This sci-fi horror movie does not stand out in its genre, but if you’re looking for a cult classic to fall in love with or an unserious movie that promises a good time, Maximum Overdrive is right for you — especially now that it’s available to stream for free. If you don’t like it, you can simply turn it off and move on to one of the many free sci-fi movies on YouTube.
