ABC has had quite the potent one-two punch of emergency services procedurals in recent years thanks to The Rookie and 9-1-1. Even as new series like High Potential and Will Trent have made their mark as ratings darlings, the two series have been reliable fan favorites on the network heading into their ninth and tenth seasons, respectively. Both have busy years ahead of them, with the former eyeing a midseason return that will introduce some new key characters in John Nolan’s (Nathan Fillion) story as well as the new spin-off, The Rookie North, while the latter premieres this fall alongside Season 2 of its spin-off, 9-1-1: Nashville, with some big crossover plans in the works. Still, the Disney-owned broadcaster is currently eyeing another addition to its procedural roster.
Deadline has confirmed that ABC now has a new crime thriller series lined up that will strike a tone somewhere between the two hits while taking the case-solving and rescue operations out to sea. Titled Dive, it’ll revolve around “an elite team of police divers and investigators who solve crimes that begin where the surface ends” in a city famous for its relationship with water — New Orleans. Finer details about the procedural and its characters have yet to be revealed, but it does have a big name at the helm in Steven Kane. He’s perhaps best known for his stint as showrunner on the fourth season of the John Krasinski-led Jack Ryan series and Paramount+’s Halo adaptation, though he also co-created the underrated dystopian TNT show The Last Ship starring the late Eric Dane. This will be a return to ABC for the creator, as he previously wrote for J.J. Abrams‘ Alias.
Although it’s still in early development and casting isn’t finalized, Kane already sees a lot of potential in Dive to be the next franchise for ABC if it finds an audience. He quietly mentioned the series at a television event in Europe back in June, indicating how the premise could easily expand, whether that be in new locations or with other specialized teams. For now, he just has to get the show off the ground, and he has a team of big names to do it. He’s developing the series with 20th Television alongside Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks banner. Kristina Sorensen is also attached as an executive producer with Kane.
