“The Voice” returned for Season 30 on Monday, and veteran coach Kelly Clarkson is already feeling defeated by the show’s newest additions — especially country superstar Riley Green.
Green made quite a splash in his “Voice” debut on Monday, with contestants swooning at every blink of his sparkling eyes, then falling over themselves to join his very first team. The funny thing is, he genuinely didn’t seem like he was trying to make any of this happen. As Clarkson suspects, it’s just Green’s charm, and she doesn’t like what it could mean for her standing in the competition.
“Last season, we didn’t have a country person,” Clarkson told the camera between auditions. “So I don’t know if it’s the Tom Selleck mustache or the Marlboro Man vibe, but I’m over it already. We just started this season and it’s already defeating to sit next to [Green].”
And Clarkson is right to see Green as a worthy adversary. The coaches found themselves fighting over several contestants during Monday’s premiere, with more opting to join Green’s team than Clarkson’s. (In her defense, though, it was pretty much understood that any contestant from Alabama — of which there were several — would end up choosing Jacksonville native Green.)
Clarkson is also rightly concerned about this season’s other new coach, Hollywood monarch Queen Latifah, a self-proclaimed “Voice” super fan who seemed right at home in that big red swivel chair.
“Man, Queen, she just kind of comes in with something real beautiful to say right at the tail end and then wins them over,” Clarkson lamented. “I wanted to pick her by the end of the pitch. She’s really at this. And she’s new. You’re not supposed to be that great yet, ma’am.”
And the strange situation wasn’t lost on Latifah who admitted, “It’s crazy to go up against Kelly. When I watch the show, I’m usually jumping up with her on the other side of the television, so this is very strange to be in this position, competing with her for a talent.”
