Warning: SPOILERS For Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 7 – “Den Of Sin”Dutton Ranch star Juan Pablo Raba teases the darker direction for Joaquin Reyes, and his conflict with his adoptive half-brother, Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney).
Joaquin experienced the most disappointing moment of his life in Dutton Ranch episode 7. Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) retired and announced that the 10-Petals Ranch would pass to her biological son, Rob-Will. Joaquin expected his name to be called, and he was supposed to be named before Rob-Will blackmailed his mother into changing her mind.
ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley interviewed Juan Pablo Raba about the twist that changed the course of Joaquin’s life and the direction of the 10-Petals Ranch. Raba reveals Joaquin’s mindset after Beulah betrayed him, and that she was “taking everything away from him” when she chose Rob-Will. Juan explains how, following Beulah’s decision, Joaquin “doesn’t have anything.” Read his quotes below:
ScreenRant: It seems like he’s willing to effectively sacrifice everything for Beulah, which is a very important line that’s said at the very beginning of episode 107, where he says, “You can’t say I’m not willing to bleed for the ranch.” And Beulah says back, “Well, you shouldn’t have to.” What do you think that says about Joaquin’s headspace, overall, and what his goals are in life at this point in time?
Juan Pablo Raba: It’s funny because you said he’s willing to lose everything, but the reality is, Joaquin, doesn’t have anything. He doesn’t have anything. He doesn’t have love. He doesn’t have money of his own, so to speak. He doesn’t have a property. He has been, all his life, working towards only one goal, and it’s being the rightful heir to the throne, and he did everything right. He didn’t get into money problems, women problems, booze, or drugs, like Rob-Will did. He went to school, and he got his degree. He’s like, ‘Dude, I did everything right. Why won’t you give me what belongs to me? But mostly, why won’t you love me? Why won’t you accept me as a Jackson?’ So he doesn’t have anything.
Now you stripped away everything from him, but the worst thing you stripped away from Joaquin was hope. So now the question is, what will he do? Bloodlines, they’re just ideas. It’s like borders, right? What is a border? What is a bloodline? Why can’t I be your rifle heir because of blood? What is blood? So it just leaves him in this position of, ‘I tried. I did everything right. What do you want me to do? How can I prove to you?’ And it’s not like he can shut up and go like, ‘Oh, well, I’m just going to go and be, I don’t know, a dentist.’ All he has is the ranch. He doesn’t have anything else, and you’re taking away everything from him.
Dutton Ranch gradually revealed the lifelong animosity between Joaquin, the ‘good’ adopted son who did everything right, and Rob-Will, who is a violent drug addict. Joaquin cleaned up Rob-Will’s messes throughout their lives, including Rob-Will’s murder of Wes Ayers (Nakoa DeCoite) in Dutton Ranch‘s series premiere. Joaquin even bought himself a new cowboy hat to denote what he thought was his new status as head of the 10-Petals Ranch.
Rob-Will resents Joaquin, and vice versa. Rob-Will’s latest grievance was that Kino sent him to rehab. Rob-Will tried to have Joaquin killed in Dutton Ranch episode 6, when he manipulated Chet Davis’ (Hart Denton) anger at Joaquin for firing him. Rob-Will refuses to let Kino take his inheritance, and he pushed Beulah to name him instead of Joaquin on the basis of being her biological son.

However, Dutton Ranch episode 7’s flashbacks added a fascinating wrinkle: Rob-Will was an unplanned pregnancy, and Beulah (Rebeca Robles) killed Rob-Will’s father, Luke (Cameron Cowperthwaite), in 1981. Luke’s raping Beulah, and the truth about his death, are secrets Beulah has kept for the last 40 years.
One other person knows the truth about Rob-Will’s father: Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo), who was there in 1981 when Beulah killed Luke. Mariano now holds a clandestine position of power at the 10-Petals Ranch and is part of why even the 10-Petals’ cowboys called their ranch and the Jacksons “crooked.”
Joaquin’s next move could change the course of the 10-Petals Ranch and create a brother vs. brother war with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) caught in the middle, as Dutton Ranch heads into its season 1 finale.
