By 1969, Elvis Presley had already spent more than a decade making music history. But 57 years ago today, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for what would turn out to be the final time.
On Nov. 1, 1969, “Suspicious Minds” hit No. 1, giving Presley his 18th and final chart-topper on the Hot 100.
It was a remarkable comeback for Presley, who had recently reasserted himself as a major musical force with his acclaimed 1968 television special. And the song that took him back to No. 1 had already failed once before Presley ever recorded it.
‘Suspicious Minds’ Wasn’t Originally an Elvis Presley Song
“Suspicious Minds” was written by Mark James, who first recorded the song himself in 1968.
James drew inspiration from a complicated period in his own romantic life. Although he was married, he still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was also married. The situation helped inspire a song about jealousy, mistrust and two people trapped in a dysfunctional relationship.
James recorded “Suspicious Minds” with producer Chips Moman at American Sound Studio in Memphis, but the single failed to chart. That could have been the end of the song.
Instead, when Presley booked time at American Sound, James and others believed “Suspicious Minds” might be exactly the kind of mature rock ‘n’ roll song the singer needed.
Presley agreed.
Elvis Presley Returned to Memphis
The sessions were significant for another reason: Presley hadn’t recorded in Memphis since 1955.
According to music historian Fred Bronson’s “Billboard Book of Number One Hits,” Presley arrived at American Sound Studio in January 1969 for a marathon recording session that stretched across 10 days. The sessions proved extraordinarily productive, yielding “In the Ghetto,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Suspicious Minds,” among other songs.
The book also notes that American Sound had already developed an impressive reputation, with hits including the Box Tops’ “The Letter” and Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man” recorded there.
Presley recorded “Suspicious Minds” during the early morning hours of Jan. 23, 1969, with Moman producing. James deliberately stayed away from the session after sensing that his presence in the studio made Presley uncomfortable.

When James heard Presley’s recording, he initially thought it was too slow. After hearing the finished version, however, he was blown away.
The recording featured a sprawling arrangement of guitar, bass, organ, piano, drums, horns, strings and backing vocals, including vocals from future Grateful Dead member Donna Jean Godchaux.
It also featured one of the song’s most distinctive quirks: a lengthy fade near the end that makes it sound as though the record is ending before the music suddenly comes roaring back.
‘Suspicious Minds’ Became Elvis Presley’s Final No. 1 Hit
Presley introduced “Suspicious Minds” onstage during his 1969 Las Vegas engagement before RCA released the single later that summer.
It entered the Hot 100 at No. 77 and climbed the chart for seven weeks before reaching No. 1 for the week ending Nov. 1, according to “The Billboard Book of Number One Hits.”
That made “Suspicious Minds” Presley’s first No. 1 single since “Good Luck Charm” in 1962, ending a seven-year gap between chart-toppers. More importantly, it became the King’s 18th and final No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Presley continued recording hits after “Suspicious Minds.” “Burning Love” came agonizingly close in 1972, reaching No. 2, but Chuck Berry’s “My Ding-a-Ling” kept it from the top spot.
Presley’s final recording sessions took place in 1975 and 1976, including sessions at Graceland. He gave his final concert in Indianapolis on June 26, 1977, less than two months before his death at 42.
But his last trip to the very top of the Hot 100 came eight years earlier with a song another singer had already released without success.
Fifty-seven years later, “Suspicious Minds” remains one of the defining recordings of Presley’s career—and the song that gave the King his final No. 1.
