Jessica Chastain’s latest horror film took the top spot at the North American box office this weekend. It has outperformed forecasts even though critics and moviegoers rated it among the worst releases of 2026.
Other Mommy wins at the box office this weekend
Other Mommy, a Universal and Blumhouse production, collected $27.5 million domestically from 3,365 theaters. Friday brought in $12.6 million, Saturday added $8.95 million, and Sunday finished with $5.95 million. International markets contributed $17.69 million, which lifts the worldwide total to $45.19 million (via Box Office Mojo).
Chastain plays a double-jointed doppelgänger from hell. The story centers on Bela, an 8-year-old whose parents are struggling in their marriage. A sinister entity crawls out of her closet and takes on her mother’s likeness. Bela calls it Other Mommy, and its menace toward her and her family keeps growing. The film cost $18 million to make. Its worldwide gross already runs more than 2.5 times that figure after one weekend, so the movie sits comfortably in the black on production costs alone. The studios have not disclosed marketing spend, which will trim the final profit, but the opening gives the film a strong head start.
However, sustaining that momentum could prove difficult. Critics gave Other Mommy a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences surveyed by CinemaScore handed it a D+. Even Digger, last weekend’s high-profile flop, got a C+ from the same poll. Grades like these typically signal steep drops in the coming weeks.
The weekend’s other new wide release fared far worse. Sony’s The Social Reckoning, an R-rated Facebook drama written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, landed in fifth place with $5.5 million. Digger fell 60% in its second weekend and took in $3.2 million. Among holdovers, Verity placed second with $11.4 million, Resident Evil took third and sits at $300 million globally against a $75 million budget. Lastly, Heart of the Beast took fourth.
