Missy Elliott was presented with the Dancers Against Cancer Icon Award at the organization’s annual “Gala of the Stars” by none other than Mrs. Iconic herself, Janet Jackson.
The two legends have never been shy about expressing their love, adoration and respect for one another and this night was no different. Ms. Jackson was on hand to pay tribute to Missy’s generational talent, creativity and lasting influence on both the dance and music worlds. It was even sweeter that she was last year’s awardee, making it an official passing of the torch from one icon to another.

“Missy helped make dancers impossible to ignore,” Janet said to the room. “She elevated choreography, embraced individuality and inspired generations of dancers to dream bigger, move differently and believe that dance could be a powerful force in shaping popular culture. That influence lives far beyond a single song or single performance. It lives in every artist who feels a little braver because Missy showed them what was possible. She didn’t just put dancers in the spotlight, she helped change the spotlight itself.”
Yes, Janet!
During her speech, Missy payed homage to the place that dancers hold in promoting songs, creating trends and helping artists to bring their entire visions to life.
“Dancers are not just props on a stage behind artists. What y’all give an artist’s show is energy, emotion, expression, excitement, and entertainment,” she said. “You bring life to an artist’s lyrics on that stage. Y’all are artists too! Because it takes incredible skill, dedication, discipline, practice and passion to do what you do.”
Janet and Missy shared a series of touching posts and captions to their respective Instagram accounts, with each of them sharing insight into what makes the other an icon and a great friend.
“Jack, your artistry has sealed your status in history as an ICON, but to me, you’re so much more than that,” Janet shared. “In an industry where it’s so difficult to find authentic, loyal friends, you have been that for me & I’m so lucky to have found u. I will cherish our friendship forever. It was so good to see you this week! Thank u for ur warmth, ur kind heart, and the endless laughs. Congratulations again on the award (so well deserved!). I love celebrating you, and I always will, whether we’re in the same room or not. I love you. ♥️J”

Missy’s words to Janet held similar sentiments.
“Dear @janetjackson we have been friends way over two decades, & I still am one of your BIGGEST fans! Of course, I’m a fan of your music, BUT I’m the biggest fan of YOU, the PERSON,” she said. “With all that you’ve done globally, you have NEVER been loudest in the room, but those in the room know you are MOTHA! Your SELFLESSNESS & HUMILITY should be studied! Your beauty outside matches the INSIDE! I Love you, j, & thank you for this award it’s the best feeling getting a ICON award from a ICON!”
