Katie Maloney admitted it was challenging filming Vanderpump Rules with Lisa Vanderpump on Wednesday’s episode of her shared podcast with Dayna Kathan.
While also naming Kristen Doute, 43, and Lala Kent, 36, as “tough competitors,” Katie, 40, shared why it was “hard” filming scenes with her former SUR Restaurant boss, Lisa, 66, and looked back on a relationship she had with a covert narcissist — as she hinted at the mystery man’s identity.
“It was really hard to film with Lisa,” Katie shared on the October 28 episode of Disrespectfully, via Vanderpod Recaps on Instagram.
“It was a challenging one because, for one thing, for a long time she made me really, really nervous, and then other times it’s like, we got to tell her what’s been going on in our lives, and she would just be like, ‘Why are you telling me this?’ Then all of a sudden you feel like crazy because you’re like, ‘Why am I telling you this?’ So I mean, [not for] reasons that people would assume, but I remember [being] like, ‘Oh man, I got to film with Lisa,’” she continued. “It was hard. It didn’t come as [naturally].”
According to Katie, she was “so comfortable” with everyone else because she “spent so much time with [them].”
Although Katie wouldn’t want to film with any of her former Pump Rules castmates today, she said that the only other people she sometimes had trouble with were Kristen and Lala.
“It was always challenging sometimes filming with, like Kristen or Lala, when you’re not getting along with them because they’re tough competitors. You know what I mean? Like, they do not let things go,” she explained.
Moving on to her relationship with a covert narcissist, Katie, who was previously married to Tom Schwartz, 44, said that although she doesn’t like to diagnose a person, it was clear that they had all the traits of a covert narcissist.
“A covert narcissist hides classic narcissistic traits, such as a deep need for admiration, a lack of empathy, and a sense of entitlement behind a quiet, shy, or self-effacing exterior. They’re not braggy. They’re not like, vain, because everyone always associates narcissism with somebody who is like, very self-obsessed and very self-important, and coverts are not. But they absolutely exhibit and have every other trait of, like, mental and emotional abuse and those types of things,” Katie explained.
Katie then said that covert narcissists have a chronic victim mentality, passive-aggressive behavior, hypersensitivity to criticism, and hidden superiority.
During her time with this person, Katie said she felt diminished.
“My feelings were like, ‘That’s not important. Why are you focusing on that?’ ‘I’m focusing on it because I feel strongly about it.’ Or they would cheat on me and suddenly, like, I deserved it. Like, ‘Well, it’s because we were in a hard place or because you were like, acting in a certain way,’” she recalled.
While Katie knew something was “deeply, deeply wrong” in the relationship, she confessed to it becoming “normal.”
“I loved them. And they loved me … So I mean, love is a hell of a drug. I just was like, ‘Well, maybe I am the problem. I know I can be a bit dramatic and those types of things. So maybe they’re right.’ They were very, very convincing,” she shared.
Katie and Tom were together for 12 years, and Katie has been dating musician Nick Martin, 43, for two years. Following her divorce, Katie admitted that she didn’t feel emotionally supported by Tom, who admittedly cheated on her on a number of occasions.
