Travis Barker said he advised his son to turn down a performance offer from The Voice.
The Blink-182 drummer made the remarks on The New York Times‘ Popcast, where he spoke about guiding his son through the music industry.
“My son called me the other day and he’s like, ‘Hey, they offered me to go on The Voice,’” Barker told the podcast. “I was like, ‘Dude, you’re way too cool for that. You got to think about your idols. If your idol is Kurt Cobain, would he ever do The Voice? No.’”
Barker acknowledged that he himself has performed several times on American Idol, but explained: “I’m different. I’m doing fun shit that’s just fun for me ’cause I’m a drummer and I’m not on the forefront. It’d be different if I was singing with all these people.”
He then told Popcast his final words of advice for singer Landon, which was to “stay on your own trajectory”
“I’m in the studio, I hear the songs that he’s creating,” he said. “There’s no rush, you know?”
Barker, who is set to release his new documentary Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear on Hulu and Disney+ on August 13, revealed to Popcast that Blink-182 are working on a new album.
When asked about what he was currently working on, Barker said: “I’m starting a couple of other projects, like producing projects, working on the next Blink album.”
When he was then asked whether the band were working on the record this year or in 2027, he added: “Working on the Blink album this year.”
The pop-punk legends last released music in 2023 with ‘One More Time…’ – their first record in over a decade with the original trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Barker.
Previously, Landon has shared that his dad Travis “doesn’t let me down easy” when it comes to musical feedback. In September 2023, Landon released his debut single ‘Friends With My Ex’, which Travis helped co-produce.
Landon said he will “definitely shoot[s] for his advice whenever I can get it”, adding: “If I was talking to somebody else and they didn’t like the song, they would let me down easy. I feel like [Travis] doesn’t let me down easy. It’s good – I so appreciate it because I love authenticity, and I love the transparency, and he’s always transparent and supportive. It works very well.”
