Fine Young Cannibals‘ “She Drives Me Crazy” is still doing exactly what its title promised, 37 years after it first hit the charts.
The song keeps resurfacing in online conversation, and the reactions are never quiet. A recent thread saw one fan write, “You could not escape this song. It was EVERYWHERE,” while another admitted flatly, “It drove me crazy,” using the title against itself.
The song’s backstory explains why it still sounds so unlike anything else from the era. The trio, Roland Gift, David Steele, and Andy Cox, wanted Prince to produce their second album, “The Raw & the Cooked.” Their label broke the news that Prince didn’t work as a hired producer for other artists, but the band still walked away with access to his Paisley Park studio and his longtime engineer, David Z. Gift also wrestled with the track in the studio until he dropped his usual delivery for the piercing falsetto that ended up defining the whole recording.
That success is also at the center of a common argument among fans: that Fine Young Cannibals peaked right here and never came close again. “Then just disappeared!” one commenter wrote, and the timeline backs it up, “The Raw & the Cooked” was the band’s final studio album, and they broke up entirely by 1992, resurfacing only briefly for one single in 1996.
They haven’t vanished for good, though. Gift has spent the past couple of years touring as “Roland Gift Presents Fine Young Cannibals: 40 Years,” celebrating the band’s 1985 debut, and released a new song, “Everybody Knows It’s Christmas,” in late 2025. Meanwhile, “She Drives Me Crazy” itself has found a second life online, racking up more than 320 million views across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook after a recent re-release, proof the song never actually left, even if the band mostly did.
