Hey, The Young and the Restless fans. Right now, Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) is not in a good place since delivering Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope)’s baby girl, and people are starting to worry about him. Adam is struggling to cope with his unexpected feelings, and it is causing him to fixate on Sally, but mostly on baby Ruby.
And Adam appears to be heading towards some sort of crisis. We’re going to talk about how this Sally baby thing may set the stage for Adam and Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) to finally end their very long feud and actually, believe it or not, become friends.
The Young and the Restless: Adam Runs Into Sally and Ruby
So, this week, Adam runs into Sally and Ruby at the Chancellor Park Cafe. And Adam tells Sally that he feels protective of her baby, and he worries that it’s not safe for Ruby to be outside since she’s a newborn. So Adam’s totally smitten with Ruby and thinks she’s perfect. And Sally says that Adam can see Ruby whenever he wants.
And then Sally asks Adam how he’s doing, because she feels like he’s bottling up his feelings. And he admits to Sally, yes, he is feeling things. And Adam says it’s all hitting him harder than he expected. And Sally tells Adam she understands how this could be triggering for him, because Ruby’s birth brought up the same feelings for her about little Ava.
And then Sally tells Adam that getting the chance to be a mom to a little girl again is helping ease her heartache over losing Ava. So Sally is hoping that baby Ruby might also bring Adam some measure of peace as well. And Sally also tells Adam that she thinks Ava was looking down on them and made all of this happen. And Adam thinks that’s beautiful.
Could Adam and Billy Become Friends on Y&R?
And then talk turns to Billy and how he reacted to Adam delivering baby Ruby. And Sally says this situation could actually lead to Adam and Billy becoming friends. And of course, Adam doesn’t think that’s ever going to happen, but he didn’t seem opposed.
And then, when Sally told Adam that Billy had flown to London to see his mom, Jill Abbott (Jess Walton), that really surprised Adam. And then Sally explained that she had actually urged Billy to go and said she wanted him to be there for his mom. But Adam said if it was him, he would never have left her.
And then, after Sally goes, Adam has a flashback of him telling Sally that they lost their baby girl, Ava. And while Adam’s thinking back on that, Chelsea Lawson Newman (Melissa Claire Egan) shows up, because she’s worried about Adam. She wants to know if he’s okay, and he totally just tries to play it off. But Chelsea can tell something isn’t right with him.
Young and Restless: Billy Won’t Like Adam Hanging Around
And at the moment, Adam is confused. He’s all caught up in feelings about Ava and Ruby, which is understandable. And with Sally being so sympathetic and saying Adam can see Ruby whenever he wants, he is going to take her up on that. However, Billy is not going to like that when he gets back, because he’s still angry with Adam over issues from years back.
Billy is likely always going to hold Adam responsible for his daughter Delia Abbott (Sophie Pollono)’s death. And that’s why it’s hard for Billy to show Adam any compassion. That’s also why Billy refused to shake Adam’s hand after the wedding. But at least Billy did eventually shake Adam’s hand and thanked him for everything he did for Sally and for helping her give birth to Ruby.
But we also know from an interview with Jason Thompson that Adam is going to get fixated on Ruby and Sally, and it is going to cause some more issues. I fully expect Adam to be irrationally protective over both Ruby and Sally, but more so Ruby, as we head into November sweeps, which kicks off this Thursday.
Adam’s Guilt Over Ava on Y&R
And just to be clear, I do not think Adam’s fixation is going to be in a romantic or sexual way towards Sally. It’s more about guilt over the baby they lost. And that was what came up, you know, when Adam was delivering Ruby, because Adam was terrified something would happen to her like it did to his and Sally’s baby. So, Adam is still feeling guilty, like he should have found a way to protect and save Ava, but he couldn’t. So, he’s all caught up in that.
And so this residual guilt manifests as Adam wanting the best for Sally and Ruby, and it’s going to come out as overprotectiveness. Basically, Adam has losing Ava mixed up in his mind with little Ruby. So he’s projecting, and Adam’s going to try and protect her as much as he can, and Sally, too. But then everybody in Adam’s life is going to get even more concerned than they already are.
Young and the Restless: Nick Is Worried About Adam
We’ve already got Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) worried. He talks with Chelsea about Adam this week, and Nick wants to know how Chelsea’s dealing with Adam delivering Sally’s baby. And Chelsea’s like, “Hey, everything’s fine.” And she tells Nick that she’s happy and she’s relieved that everything went well with Ruby’s delivery.
But Nick thinks it is more complicated than that. However, Chelsea doesn’t think so. She stays firm, and she reassures Nick it’s not more complicated. And Chelsea is insisting that Adam would never hide his feelings from her. But Nick says he’s not so sure about that. And then Chelsea gets defensive.
But Nick is absolutely right, because Adam is keeping things from her. So, Nick’s going to continue to worry about Adam, and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) is too. It’s actually very sweet, because Adam’s also worried about Nick. It is top-notch brother bonding.

An Intervention for Adam on Y&R?
So, Chelsea thinks everything is fine now, but I suspect soon she’s going to notice that maybe Nick had a point, and Adam really is struggling. And the more Adam becomes fixated on Ruby and is determined to be a presence in her life, I think Chelsea’s worries are going to intensify.
And honestly, I think Sally will start to worry. She may notice that Adam is being overly protective and preoccupied with Ruby. And I think Sally will realize Adam’s just trying to protect her baby because he couldn’t protect their baby, Ava. And then Sally, Chelsea, and the Newmans may stage some sort of emotional intervention for Adam.
We could see Victor, Nick, and the others sit him down just to talk to Adam and maybe get him to consider therapy to process his unresolved feelings of guilt and loss and grief about Ava, and how he’s conflating it with protecting Ruby. They’re going to need Adam to see that it’s Billy and Sally’s job to do that.
The Young and the Restless: Two Fathers, Two Losses
But as Adam is struggling, I also think Billy may realize that Adam is kind of where Billy was after he lost Delia. It’s a similar situation. Ava died at childbirth, and Adam couldn’t do anything about it. Delia was older, just seven, though, when she died, and Billy couldn’t do anything about it. So, Adam and Billy have both lost daughters, and they both carry guilt.
With Delia, Billy left her alone in the car for just a few minutes. That contributed to her death, and that decision still haunts him. And Adam had to choose between Sally’s life and Ava’s life. Adam doesn’t regret choosing Sally, but it haunts him, because it was a no-win situation. And then Sally raged and said Adam let their baby die. And that just crushed him.
The Young and the Restless: A Redemption Story Ahead
So, I think we could see Billy having an epiphany about Adam. And I think this could be what makes Billy and Adam get past their hatred for each other and leave all that ugliness in the past. Like Sally said, they might really become friends. You know, maybe not bowling buddies, but a vast improvement over how it’s been.
But first, I think Adam’s going to get a lot worse before he gets better. And Billy’s going to be pivotal to Adam getting through this. It feels like a redemption story that’s going to start in sweeps, but could last far beyond that.
