I don’t have a particularly strong connection with A Different World, the 1980s sitcom which began as a spinoff of The Cosby Show before growing into its own. Following an ensemble group of students at Hillman College, the show dealt with life in HBCUs in the late ’80s and early ’90s, unafraid to touch on subjects like racism, class relations, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic happening in real life at the time. It made the show stand out not only for its memorable characters, but also for its willingness to tackle difficult subjects in a sitcom setting.
As for Netflix’s sequel, A Different World doesn’t quite have the same presentation. Stylized more as a teen comedy-drama, the show follows Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the rebellious youngest daughter of legacy characters Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). The show follows Deborah throughout her first year at Hillman, following in her parents’ footsteps while dealing with the added pressure of their achievements after college. As it turns out, Whitley and Dwayne made quite the names for themselves following graduation.
A Different World 2026 is showrun by Felicia Pride.
Deborah’s navigation leads her to meet a number of students who become integral to her life. From the highly intelligent and determined Rashida (Alijah Kai Haggins) to football star Shaquille (Cornell Young IV), Deborah’s college experience is filled with relationships to navigate. That said, the show doesn’t shy away from nostalgia, either, giving Whitley, Dwayne, and a number of other legacy characters from A Different World a spotlight, catching up on them decades later. It makes for a premise that appeals to those already familiar with the first series, but welcoming enough for relative newcomers (like me).
A Different World Shines When Its Characters Are Dealing With Sitcom Storylines
A Different World‘s characters begin archetypal, as is the case with most sitcoms on TV. However, the longer the show goes on, the more layered and multifaceted they become. Deborah is a headstrong, oftentimes reckless college student with good intentions, making her an endearing protagonist that’s easy to root for. Other highlights are the aforementioned Rashida, whose responsible nature makes for a good contrasting force as she tries to be more open to spontaneity, and Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall), an LGBTQ+ student trying to shake off a past he regrets.
The show feels less like a sitcom, and more like a drama wearing a sitcom coat of paint.
The show expertly balances these stories with a number of sitcom storylines, from a first day at school to trying to make ends meet during the year. What makes A Different World stand out, however, is that its approach comes from both a comedic and dramatic angle. This helps anchor the problems the characters face in real stakes, while allowing jokes and a lighter tone when required. Granted, heavier subjects are given the gravity they deserve, too. The show feels less like a sitcom, and more like a drama wearing a sitcom coat of paint.
But this approach works to the series’ benefit, especially for some particularly significant characters. Shaquille is the most prominent of these, balancing his football career with a romantic spark for Deborah, one rooted in a rocky past the two share. These are coupled with issues he faces with Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell), who serves as his professional manager, due to a painful family crisis. It makes for mostly dramatic scenarios with slivers of humor, which works for his story and adds depth to his character without compromising the series’ overall tone.
It helps that Deborah and her friends aren’t the only ones given this treatment. The Wayne family, Ron, and a handful of other surprise cameos bring the spirit of the original A Different World into the forefront, but with a slightly more dramatic flavor to it. I appreciate how the sequel’s development for its older cast felt natural and realistic. There are a handful of decisions that feel somewhat generic, unfortunately for the Waynes, but they’re tackled with such tact that I was wrapped up in even the most generic of plot turns.
The show weaves both older character stories and those of the younger generation expertly together, with storylines that feel relevant to the modern era of HBCUs. It helps that the series’ format is rather unique. Across 10 episodes, the show covers an entire year of Deborah’s time at Hillman. This affords the series a vignette-style approach to its storytelling, dropping in on characters’ lives across the year while maintaining a story that flows expertly from episode to episode.
A Different World Starts Falling Apart After Its First Semester Ends
All of these positive elements are, for the most part, sequestered to the first half of the series. After the first semester ends and students return for the spring semester, the series starts to lose traction with what made the first five episodes so strong. It doesn’t happen right away: there are a number of episodes that provide unique ways of delivering important, oftentimes socially relevant stories in its comedy-drama fashion. But there are just as many that fall into a trap of repetition.
While relationship drama is par for the course with many college-focused TV shows, A Different World originally uses these relationships as a backdrop to showcase how characters’ lives are shifting throughout their first year at Hillman. But, with every passing episode, the relationship drama slowly starts to steal the spotlight from more compelling narratives. While it does use this to its advantage to touch on serious subjects, especially for Amir and his friend, Hazel (Kennedi Reece), for the most part, it falls into generic traps that dilute the interesting first half.
The character development can only do so much when the show’s story feels like it’s altered entirely.
Its only saving grace is that most characters come out unscathed. While a number of main cast members slowly morph into romantic figureheads instead of fully fleshed-out students, it’s done in service of developing some of the more prominent characters. It still feels like a disservice to a few, especially one whose arc I was originally enjoying. The character development can only do so much when the show’s story feels like it’s altered entirely, but it does offer at least some continuation for them, despite the drastic shift in focus.
Luckily, A Different World does pull itself together in the final episode, delivering a powerful finale for all its characters that left me wanting more. I’m happy to see this Netflix sequel grow into its own, while providing enough drips of nostalgia for viewers who adore the original. It struggles with circular storytelling in the back half, but what flaws it grows to have are overshadowed by the comedy, the drama, and the characters. It’s a decent successor to the original show, and one that provides a perfect springboard for what could be a worthwhile, long-running continuation.
All 10 episodes of A Different World arrive on Netflix on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
