Apple TV is about to take on one of its most ambitious projects yet. The streaming service hosts some of television’s best sci-fi shows today, including acclaimed series like Severance, Foundation, Silo, and For All Mankind. Now, Neuromancer joins Apple’s already impressive lineup.
Based on William Gibson’s 1984 novel, Neuromancer is a sci-fi epic comparable to Dune and The Expanse. The story blends cyberpunk and science fiction to deliver a gripping narrative featuring high-stakes heists, dangerous artificial intelligence, and more. For years, many believed adapting Neuromancer was impossible, but Apple TV’s attempt might set a new standard for science fiction in the years to come.
William Gibson’s Neuromancer Was Thought to be “Unfilmable”
Perhaps the most compelling element of Apple TV’s upcoming new cyberpunk series is that it should never have been made. Apple Studios is far from the first big name to try to adapt Neuromancer.
Director Chris Cunningham originally developed a film adaptation with Star Wars icon Hayden Christensen rumored to be in the lead role, but left the project after clashes with the studio. Since then, multiple directors have tried and failed to adapt Neuromancer, including The Mask‘s Chuck Russell, Deadpool‘s Tim Miller, and Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali.
While all had a passion for the story, none succeeded in getting it adapted for the big screen. Neuromancer is especially hard to adapt, particularly because of its portrayal of “cyberspace,” a digital realm where humans interact with computers. This complexity, along with the cyberpunk elements, powerful social critiques, and other intricate parts of William Gibson’s sci-fi universe, makes it one of the most challenging books to translate to the screen.
James Anthony of The Guardian went so far as to call Neuromancer “unfilmable” in a 2008 article, and his colleague Ben Child echoed that sentiment two years later. Apple’s new series aims to prove them wrong—and fans of the Neuromancer books should be excited.
Neuromancer Could Be the Biggest Sci-Fi Show of the 2020s
Neuromancer’s adaptation challenges stem from the story’s scope and the complexity of its world. These aspects aren’t flaws; they’re strengths.
If the Apple TV project captures the story’s core, the series would reap the benefits of its faithfulness and be remembered as one of the most stunning science fiction shows ever made. While shows like The Expanse defined the sci-fi genre for the 2010s, Neuromancer could define the 2020s.
Apple Studios has a terrific reputation for building sci-fi worlds. Its most notable sci-fi series is Foundation, which adapts Isaac Asimov’s similarly complex work. With a budget beyond that of a blockbuster movie, Foundation builds an immersive world that feels every bit as impressive as its predecessor on the page.
Using Foundation as the blueprint, Apple has every tool it needs to make Neuromancer a bona fide hit that could change how sci-fi stories are told. The series also features an all-star cast, including Callum Turner in the lead role, Mark Strong, Briana Middleton, Clémence Poésy, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Laird, and more.
Dane DeHaan, Max Irons, and André De Shields have been confirmed to appear in the first season as guest stars. With Graham Roland and J.D. Dillard on board as developers, Neuromancer is already off to a great start. Neuromancer is the next cyberpunk sci-fi phenomenon.
The exciting new series gives Apple a chance to prove critics who called the book “unfilmable” wrong. Anyone who enjoys hard science fiction won’t want to miss what could be the genre’s biggest show of the decade when it finally premieres on Apple TV.
Neuromancer is expected to premiere on January 22, 2027.
