Disney+ has named its top film franchise as Toy Story with 2 billion hours streamed. In a new report, Disney+ reveals that not only is Pixar’s Toy Story the streamer’s top film franchise worldwide with 2 billion hours streamed, but the original Toy Story regularly ranks among its top 20 movies each year.
Also, the first four Toy Story movies were streamed for 60 million hours in the lead-up to Toy Story 5‘s theatrical debut. That’s the largest lift Disney+ has ever seen ahead of a new theatrical release.
That may come as a surprise to some, given geek culture behemoths Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe also call Disney+ their streaming home. However, it’s important to remember that no one watches movies as often as children, who also tend to watch the same movies and shows over and over again. Year after year, kids’ shows like Bluey and movies like Moana have dominated the streaming charts, so it makes sense that a long-running kids series like Toy Story is the top movie franchise on Disney+.
Toy Story Is the King of Movies on Disney+
Toy Story is now a 30-year-old franchise, with the first Toy Story debuting in 1995. Now there’s a whole Toy Story Collection on Disney+ that includes the first four Toy Story movies as well as various Toy Story animated shorts.
Disney+ also added several new releases ahead of Toy Story 5, including the dedicated Toy Story Collection page, Toy Story: 30 Years and Beyond – A Special Edition of 20/20, the music video for Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You” from Toy Story 5, which became Disney’s first-ever No. 1 debut song, the Toy Story 5 Red Carpet Launch Event, a 24-hour Pixar Stream, and a special look at Toy Story 5.
Toy Story 5 Is Now in Theaters
In addition to being the biggest film franchise on Disney+, Toy Story is also back in theaters, with Toy Story 5 breaking big at the box office. After just two weeks at the box office, Toy Story 5 has already earned $606.6 million worldwide. The film has also performed well with critics, earning a 92% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, with some calling it a “return to form” for Pixar.
CBR’s Toy Story 5 review was also positive. It reads, “More than anything, Toy Story 5 isn’t an attack on tech and combating the death of toys and the idea of playing. While these are topics that must be discussed, it’s more so about the importance of human connection and how toys can bring that together more than any tablet could. Bonnie needs friends, and that’s the only goal all the toys have in mind, and that alone is what makes Toy Story 5 so special.”
In Toy Story 5, Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad (Greta Lee), a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie.
Toy Story 5 is playing in theaters now. The rest of the Toy Story franchise is streaming on Disney+.
