The Harry Potter franchise has become a family affair for actor Timothy Spall, as his son, Rafe Spall, was announced to join Season 2 of the HBO series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
According to Variety, HBO announced that Rafe will play the well-loved role of Arthur Weasley for the second season of the network’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The role was famously played by Mark Williams from the very beginning, starting with 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets up until 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Die-hard fans know that Rafe’s role will be as the Weasley patriarch and a fatherly figure to Ron Weasley’s (Rupert Grint) best friend, Harry. Rafe’s role was announced alongside two more additions to Season 2 of the series, with Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle and Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey. Hewitt-Richards’ role was originally played by Shirley Henderson in the original second installment film, alongside Hugh Mitchel as Creevey.
Rafe is following in his father’s footsteps, who played the role of Peter Pettigrew in the film series. Spall’s role was as Voldemort’s loyal servant, and he appears in human form for the first time in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He played the role until the character’s supposed death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Neither Spall nor his son has made an official statement on the new role for the HBO series. Further details about playing Arthur Weasley have also not been revealed, nor has it been revealed who will play the role of Pettigrew in future seasons.
Spall did give some advice to the actor who will play his famed role in the series. He explained to People that Pettigrew is “indicative of quite a lot of evil in general,” and that “all actors have to make the part their own.”
“I would say there is something very complex about somebody that is that evil and also kind of vulnerable at the same time. That’s what I liked about him,” he explained.
When it comes to his son, Rafe, the actor began his career in the early 2000s. He has frequently collaborated with Edgar Wright and appeared in some of his biggest cult classic films, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. He also starred opposite Anne Hathaway in One Day, in the Oscar-winning film Life of Pi, and in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Rafe has also had main roles in The English, Smoke, and currently stars in Trying. He’s also scheduled to star in The Death of Sherlock Holmes.
