Hellboy’s comic debuted in 1993, and the character has since starred in countless adaptations, including tabletop role-playing games like GURPS Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. and Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game. Now, Hellboy is taking a different approach with a holiday-themed release, Hellboy: The Advent Calendar Game.
The game is available for purchase via Mantis’ online store, making this a particularly fitting seasonal release for the paranormal investigator, whose line of work rarely allows him to enjoy a quiet holiday season. Christmas is familiar territory for Hellboy, who has encountered plenty of seasonal supernatural trouble throughout his comic adventures.
Hellboy’s Advent Calendar Includes Miniatures, Monsters, and a Complete Tabletop Adventure
Mantic Games’ store page details many features of Hellboy: The Advent Calendar Game, which promises plenty of goodies for fans of the paranormal investigator. The calendar features 24 numbered doors, each containing a different game component or surprise. Opening one door per day gradually reveals the miniatures, dice, and other pieces needed to assemble the complete tabletop experience by Christmas.
According to Mantic’s product description, the calendar includes plastic miniatures of Hellboy, Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien, Johann Kraus, and the villainous Grigori Rasputin. Players will also find Frog Monster standees, custom dice, and an illustrated game mat featuring artwork inspired by the comics. The collection brings together several familiar faces from the Hellboy universe.
As for the gameplay, Mantic describes the experience as a Hellboy twist on the classic Snakes and Ladders formula. Two to four players race floor by floor through a mysterious building, attempting to reach the top before their opponents. Dice rolls determine how far characters move, but the climb comes with plenty of obstacles.

Frog Monsters lurk throughout the building, giving players the option to fight the creatures or find ways around them. Giant tentacles provide another hazard, potentially sending characters backward and undoing some of their progress. Fortunately, fellow B.P.R.D. agents can offer assistance, while shortcuts give players opportunities to climb toward the top more quickly.
According to Mantic Games’ August 26 preview, the adventure eventually leads to a showdown with Rasputin, giving the race a final supernatural confrontation. The preview also details an alternate game mode for players looking for an extra challenge, requiring them to defeat every Frog Monster rather than simply avoiding the creatures. The game targets players ages 10 and up, with straightforward rules that make it accessible to tabletop newcomers.
Mantic Games lists the calendar for £35, which converts to approximately $45 before shipping and handling.
