Jason Statham is set to explode into theaters next month with his latest movie, but before we get there, one of the English actor’s most underrated action thrillers is not to be missed on its new free streaming home. Statham is, of course, one of the biggest action stars on the planet who got his start in movies like Snatch before landing his breakout role in The Transporter, which catapulted him to superstardom.
Jason Statham Takes on the World in a Violent Action Thriller
Hitting theaters on Apr. 27, 2012, Safe is written and directed by Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans, Now You See Me). Unlike other Statham hits that feature him playing a man who was once a government agent now living off the grid, the action thriller sees him playing Luke Wright, a former government assassin, yes, but also a former NYPD cop and MMA fighter, who gave up cage fighting when his pregnant wife was murdered by the Russian mob after he unintentionally won a fixed fight.
Now living as a homeless man on the streets of New York, Luke crosses paths with Mei (Catherine Chan), a 12-year-old math prodigy who has been forced to work for a powerful Chinese Triad boss. Instead of storing their sensitive data on computers, the Triads use Mei’s gifted memory to keep their information safe. This leads to her memorizing a code that multiple criminal organizations desperately want, and after escaping her captors, makes her the target of not only the Triads, but the Russian mafia, and a group of corrupt NYPD officers as well.
Deciding to protect Mei at any cost, Luke springs into action, waging a one-man war across New York City. Using his military training, detective instincts, and relentless fighting skills, he takes on gangsters, crooked cops, and mob bosses, all while uncovering a vast conspiracy. Basically, Safe has everything you want in a good Statham movie: fast-paced action, an emotional center, and – at only 95 minutes – a short runtime.
That’s why it comes as somewhat of a surprise that Safe isn’t rated higher among critics and viewers. The film holds just a 59% score across the board on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb, easily making it one of The Stath’s most underrated movies. For those looking for something beyond hits like The Beekeeper, Shelter, and The Transporter, you’d do well to check out Safe when it lands on its new streaming home next month, as some called it “the best damned film of Jason Statham’s career” when it was released over a decade ago.
Jason Statham’s ‘Safe’ Returns to Free Streaming
Currently available to stream on Prime Video, Safe will be making its way back to free streaming next month, meaning if you don’t have a subscription to Prime, it will cost you nothing but a few ad breaks to watch Statham’s underrated 2012 action thriller. The film will be added to Plex on Aug. 1 as part of the free streaming platform’s crop of new movies, which also includes Panic Room, Last Action Hero, and Power Rangers.
Next up for Statham is the action thriller, Mutiny, which hits theaters on Aug. 21. Statham stars in the new movie alongside Annabelle Wallis and Jason Wong as Cole Reed, a man framed for the murder of his billionaire boss who uses his particular set of skills aboard a cargo ship to clear his name.
