One of the greatest action thrillers in years has suddenly emerged after landing a rare, perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it finally has a release date. Somehow expertly stitching together the elite action prowess of John Wick with the dramatic thrills of hit HBO medical series The Pitt, the mash-up genre affair finds martial arts icon and Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh taking the lead as an expert surgeon who must use her particular set of skills after being taken hostage.
From Thunder Road (the studio behind the John Wick franchise) and Tango, action thriller The Surgeon is directed by Roshan Sethi, who himself is an M.D. and a radiation oncologist and is best known for the 2025 romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy and being the co-creator behind the Fox medical series The Resident, and stars Martin Freeman, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov, and Joseph Mydell alongside Yeoh.
Yeoh has long been well-renowned as an action movie superstar thanks to her ability to stretch both her martial arts and acting muscles. Following decades of genre work in the likes of Police Story 3: Supercop, Wing Chun, 007 outing Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and many, many more, Yeoh won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the multiversal madness that is Everything Everywhere All at Once. In The Surgeon, Yeoh takes the lead as the titular doctor who is abducted and forced to operate on a mysterious patient, only to turn 35 years of surgical expertise against her captors and outwit them in a fight for survival.
The Surgeon premiered to both critical and audience acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival, with critics praising Yeoh’s performance and Sethi’s direction. The action thriller was recently picked up by Sony Pictures and has now officially been given a release date of April 2, 2027, courtesy of the Sony flagship Columbia Pictures.

The Surgeon has come out of nowhere to become one of the most exciting action thriller prospects in years. Following its debut this year, The Surgeon landed a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics hailing it as a “genre-bending swirl that is part The Pitt (but gorier), part tense crime thriller, part action movie and part midnight movie, all infused with witty touches,” and a violent action effort “that even John Wick would envy.”
Praise has also been heaped on Yeoh as she expertly carves up “dozens of baddies in this fast-paced action flick,” in a warped take on The Pitt that plays out as if “Dr. Robby had to kill a whole whack of bad guys, and you have an inkling of what The Surgeon is.” While it’s unhealthy to wish time away, April 2027 can’t get her quickly enough.
