Ever since Paramount announced Avatar Studios back in 2021, promising a slate of animated projects built around the world that Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko created, fans have mostly had announcements to chew on rather than actual content. Netflix’s live-action remake came and went with a decent-sized audience and a fairly muted cultural footprint. The original animated series kept doing what it has quietly done for two decades, finding new viewers who then discover there’s nothing new to watch next. That drought is finally ending — and quickly.
The animated feature Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender arrives this weekend, and at the film’s Comic-Con panel, Paramount+ dropped the first teaser for Avatar: Seven Havens along with a Oct. 9 premiere date. It’s worth pausing on what Seven Havens actually is, because it’s arguably the bigger deal of the two projects. The Aang film continues a story fans already know. Seven Havens is the first genuinely new chapter in the animated universe since The Legend of Korra ended in 2014, and the first new series of any kind from DiMartino and Konietzko in that world in over a decade.
The two creators famously walked away from Netflix’s live-action adaptation over creative differences, so a 26-episode series with both of them back as executive producers feels like the version of an Avatar continuation that fans have actually been asking for. Lauren Montgomery, a veteran of the original series and Korra, is directing, which should reassure anyone worried about the show’s animation pedigree. The series follows Pavi, a young Earthbender voiced by Saheli Khan, who learns she’s the next Avatar. But the world she inherits has soured on the whole institution.
According to the official logline, her discovery “marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior.” The synopsis continues that she’ll be “Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.” That’s a notable inversion of the franchise’s core idea. Both Aang and Korra dealt with the burden of being the Avatar, but the role itself was never in question.
Pavi’s world apparently fears one, and civilization has been reduced to a handful of surviving havens, which suggests something went very wrong in the years after Korra. The teaser leans into that darker register, and there’s a reasonable question about whether DiMartino and Konietzko are responding to how post-apocalyptic fiction has evolved since 2005, or simply following the trajectory Korra already started, since that series got progressively heavier as it went. Either way, the mystery of what broke the world is doing a lot of work here, and fans will immediately start theorizing about what happened to Korra.
Avatar: Seven Havens is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Oct. 9.
