Outer Banks star Drew Starkey compares Season 5 to Season 1 of the hit Netflix drama. He also promises some truly massive things to come.
Speaking to CBR’s Grae Drake during an interview at San Diego Comic-Con to promote his latest movie, Onslaught, Starkey was asked what Season 5 might have in store for fans that past seasons of Outer Banks did not. The actor teased the fifth and final season’s larger scale, compared to early installments.
Why Season 5 of Netflix’s Outer Banks Will Be Bigger Than Ever
Outer Banks will go out with a bang, and, aside from several production hiccups, it all went smoothly for a fitting series finale. Plus, the new season took the stars abroad for an even more different experience.
Well, I think, I think each season the scale kind of increases to, you know, whatever degree, and this last season they really upped it. I mean, we shot in Croatia for a couple of months. And beautiful Dubrovnik… We start our story there, and, yeah, just the scale is much larger. It’s crazy to see the progression from where we started season one to, to now where we’re at.
Created by Josh and Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks (or OBX) premiered on Netflix in 2020, introducing audiences to the residents of the eponymous South Carolina barrier islands, many of whom are starkly divided amongst the wealthy seasonal residents, or Kooks, and the working-class locals, the Pogues. Among the Pogues is Chase Stokes’ John B. Routledge, who finds himself embroiled in an unlikely romance with the “Princess of the Kooks,” Sarah Cameron, portrayed by Madelyn Cline.
Since the series’ debut, Outer Banks has received generally rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike. As of the time of writing, Outer Banks boasts a 79% critical “Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as compared to a 67% audience-generated “Popcornmeter” score on the platform.
Outer Banks Season 5 Will Be a Race Against Time for Its Leading Cast Members
Season 5 of Outer Banks will mark the culmination of some of the most harrowing storylines of the entire series, with the official logline promising that it will “[Find] the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats.”
The logline for Outer Banks Season 5 continues, “With Chandler Groff still at large, Dalia and the Corsairs closing in, and the Kooks ensuring the Pogues have no home to return to, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo must rely on their scrappy instincts—and an uneasy alliance with Rafe—to keep from falling apart for good. Their mission is now a desperate race to reclaim their future and finally win the freedom they’ve been chasing since the beginning. It’s the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home…one final time.”
Outer Banks is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Season 5 is slated to premiere on Aug. 20.
