This has been a tremendous year so far for fans of World War II movies and shows. January began with the sleeper hit The Tank, which delivered record viewership for Prime Video and received excellent reviews. The Tank was released around the same time as the digital debut of Nuremberg, the 2025 sleeper hit that grossed $70 million at the box office. Starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, Nuremberg emerged as a fan-favorite on home video, paving the way for the critically acclaimed film Pressure. Starring Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott, Pressure holds a 95% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which is in line with how fans of old-school WWII movies tend to respond to well-made movies aimed at them. And now, another new release has joined the party, hoping to build on the momentum of its three predecessors.
The movie in question received a theatrical release in June, grossing $1.5 million against a reported budget of $10 million. While it didn’t recoup its reported costs during its box-office run, the film’s theatrical release certainly created awareness for its eventual debut on the PVOD market. The movie was made available to rent and purchase this week, and according to FlixPatrol, it has already secured a spot for itself on the domestic iTunes and Amazon charts. It outperformed holdover home-video hits such as Guy Ritchie‘s action movie In the Grey, the Hugh Jackman-led period drama The Death of Robin Hood, and the horror movie Passenger.

We’re talking about director Rod Lurie‘s Lucky Strike, starring the sons of Hollywood icons Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks, Scott Eastwood and Colin Hanks. Unfolding during the Battle of the Bulge, the movie follows a soldier who is stranded behind enemy lines armed with nothing but his tenacity and a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes. The movie received mixed reviews upon release and is now sitting at a 60% critics’ score and a 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator’s consensus reads, “Presenting a straightforward tale of survival with solid suspense, Lucky Strike is a respectable tribute to wartime heroism that otherwise lacks the spark to stand out amid the crowded WWII genre.” Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
