Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse’s New Animated Sequences Get Exciting Early Tease From Jake Johnson

One of the stars of Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse hints that the element that made the first movie so groundbreaking will reach a whole new level.

The incomplete animated Spider-Verse trilogy follows Miles Morales’ (Shameik Moore) journey to becoming Spider-Man and finding friends and allies in other iterations of Spider-Man from different universes across the “Spider-Verse.” It has been three years since the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but actor Jake Johnson promises that the forthcoming animated set pieces will be worth the wait.

“I think people should be excited for what the movie is going to be. From everything that I’ve seen and recorded — it happened on the first one, it happened on the second one — it’s so good, and it’s so interesting,” Johnson said in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for The Dink. Johnson voices Peter B. Parker in the Spider-Verse movies, Miles’ initially unwilling and underwhelming mentor.

“After the cliffhanger we got in the last film, what are you most excited for people to see?” asked Crossan. In addition to his comments above, Johnson responded: “The sequences are just so well-thought-out that I think it’s always worth the wait. What that team does is worth the price of admission, and I’m, as always, so proud to be part of it.“

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s ending sees Miles accidentally landing on Earth-42, where his Uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali) is still alive, but Miles himself is the Prowler. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) rallies old friends and new ones to find Miles. Miles is also grappling with the dilemma of his father’s death being a “canon event” — if he saves his father, it will rip apart his home universe.

2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse kicked off the electrifying new take on the Spider-Man IP, told in spectacular stylized 3D animation. The movie (and its 2023 sequel) also features Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Velez voicing Miles’ parents, with Across the Spider-Verse welcoming Oscar Isaac, Daniel Kaluuya, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, and others to the lineup.

Unsurprisingly, Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (its sequel would lose to The Boy and the Heron) and many other awards. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has faced major delays since its predecessor was in theaters, owing to the extensive process of animating the movie and some revisions to the story, but it is now confirmed for a 2027 release date.

In the intervening years, however, Sony Pictures Animation has continued to establish itself as the new premier studio for animated films, primarily with KPop Demon Hunters’ smashing success last summer (distributed by Netflix). KPop Demon Hunters 2 is also in the works, setting itself up as Sony’s second massive blockbuster animated franchise. However, Johnson’s comments assure us that for Spider-Man, the high-octane viewing experience isn’t going anywhere.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release theatrically on June 18, 2027.
