Although it will be tough to outdo the relentless action that made the Season 3 premiere of Lioness the highest-rated episode to date on IMDb, Taylor Sheridan’s return to the big screen for the first time in six years sounds even more promising. As someone who has always preferred his movie scripts over his teleplays, I can’t wait to see how Sheridan expands on his previous CIA-related action after Sicario and Without Remorse. Fortunately, fellow fans won’t have to wait too long to see Sheridan’s anticipated action thriller.
Covering similar territory as his popular action series Lioness, Sheridan’s upcoming action thriller, F.A.S.T., follows a main character tasked with a perilous mission to bring down a drug cartel protected by the CIA. F.A.S.T. is blazing into theaters with its proven pedigree quicker than you may have expected.
‘Sicario’ Meets ‘Lioness’ in Taylor Sheridan’s Upcoming Action Thriller ‘F.A.S.T.’
After Taylor Sheridan reportedly wrote the screenplay in the mid-2010s, Warner Bros. acquired F.A.S.T. in 2018. At the time, Chris Pratt was considered to star, with Gavin O’Connor (Warrior, The Accountant) attached to direct. However, the project stalled when AT&T took over the studio and balked at the $60 to 70 million price tag. In 2025, the movie was revived with a starring role for 1923 alum Brandon Sklenar (who played Spencer Dutton) and longtime cinematographer-turned-director Ben Richardson set to direct.
In F.A.S.T., Sklenar stars as a former special forces commando recruited by the Drug Enforcement Agency to bring down a drug cartel protected by the CIA. For those keeping up with Sheridan’s underrated spy thriller series Lioness, F.A.S.T. feels like a spiritual successor in the way it explores the complexity, violence, and moral underpinnings of CIA black ops and black sites. Meanwhile, the DEA/CIA angle will remind you of Sicario, Sheridan’s celebrated sophomore movie that spawned a popular cinematic franchise. Sheridan wrote Sicario 3, which is currently in pre-production with Benicio del Toro reprising his role.
Although Pratt and O’Connor may have drawn a larger audience from their proven track record, I’m glad that Sheridan is reuniting with Sklenar and Richardson on F.A.S.T. The three already share a creative shorthand and know each other’s work processes, and that’s certain to yield the best result possible when the action thriller speeds into theaters in 2027.
When Will F.A.S.T. Be Released in Theaters?
In addition to Brandon Sklenar, F.A.S.T. boasts a tremendous ensemble cast that includes LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out), Juliana Canfield (Succession), Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer), Sam Claflin (Peaky Blinders), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Wilson Bethel (Untamed), Chloe Coleman (My Spy), John Hoogenakker (Chicago Fire), Barrett Carnahan (Cobra Kai), Mark O’Brien (Arrival), Hunter Emery (The Hunting Wives), Chloe Levine (The OA), and Grant Harvey (The Accountant 2).
F.A.S.T. was filmed in New Rochelle, New York, in August 2025 and the Spanish city of Murcia in November. Although Warner Bros. initially scheduled F.A.S.T. for an April 23, 2027, release, the studio recently revealed it pushed the movie back three weeks. As a result, F.A.S.T. is set to be released in theaters on May 14, 2027.
Since I enjoyed Sheridan’s most recent movie, Those Who Wish Me Dead, more than most, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see how he channels everything he’s learned from making that film and Wind River. I’m also interested in seeing how he incorporates some of the themes of Lioness into F.A.S.T. Thankfully, we’re only nine months away from its release.
