The X-Men are no strangers to threats of an alien nature, but their upcoming battle might be more than they bargained for. Marvel has officially confirmed the X-Men will be going head-to-head with none other than the Alien franchise’s legendary Xenomorph just in time for Halloween.
Alien Vs. X-Men #1 will go on sale September 30, hailing from the superstar team of co-writers Chris Claremont and Kieron Gillen, with art by Geraldo Borges. “They went looking for a Phoenix egg. They found something else,” Marvel’s solicit for the issue teases. Best of all, this isn’t going to be a simple, spooky season one-off story; Marvel has already confirmed solicits for the first three issues, planning for plenty of Alien madness for the months to come.
Marvel’s Mutants Meet Their Match With Ridley Scott’s Alien Xenomorph
Alien Vs. X-Men kicks off with a seemingly familiar story unfolding. “The X-Men return to Earth with deadly cargo, and a violent battle between mutant and alien begins. And will an unexpected ally turn the tide in the X-Men’s favor?”
As if Wolverine and Cyclops being hunted down by the Xenomorph wasn’t exciting enough, Marvel also promises another story will soon unfold: “In this special crossover decades in the making, the next evolution of Marvel’s mightiest mutants begins! Will anyone survive the experience? Plus: The first chapter of an all-new story by the legendary Chris Claremont featuring Kitty Pryde, the Brood and the Xenomorphs!”
While things are set to kick off with Alien Vs. X-Men #1 later this week, the chills and thrills will reach a fever pitch next month just before Halloween. Alien Vs. X-Men #2 goes on sale October 28, and it brings with it the arrival of none other than Cable. “He’s come from the future with a handpicked team to put a stop to the alien decimation of Earth. But is it too little, too late for the surviving X-MEN . . .and all of humanity?!”
To make matters worse, the new Alien Queen will make her terrifying presence known, and given Marvel’s past history with bringing Alien to comics, it’s unlikely that she’ll be holding back. The solicit for the second issue already seems to be teasing “surviving X-Men” — so it remains to be seen just how much blood will truly be shed and lives lost.
November’s third issue introduces some more sci-fi elements to the mix as the robot Sentinels arrive on the scene. Their solution? To nuke the X-Mansion from orbit. “It’s the only way to be sure…”
Alien Vs. X-Men Team Tease Crossover’s “Crazy Surprises” On The Way
Speaking in a press release announcing the crossover series, writer Kieron Gillen teased how much Alien meant to him. “Alien was the first R-rated movie I ever saw. Aliens is one of the four founding teenage films that I built my understanding of story structure upon. […] So, yes, this is some prime-grade bucket list stuff for me, and I’m highly enjoying taking the X-Men on an X-press elevator to hell.”
As for Chris Claremont, there was a cinematic element to bringing this story to life. “For me, the coolest aspect here is returning to a universe where I can pit my deadliest alien predators against their movie counterparts, with Kitty caught in the middle,” Claremont said. “Kitty brings a hero’s perspective to the challenge that embraces the heart and soul of the X-Men. This story is cram-packed with adventure — plus some crazy surprises along the way.”
