The sixth Insidious movie is coming to movie theaters this weekend, and ahead of its release, it has earned its debut Rotten Tomatoes score. It would appear that the franchise is going back to its roots, as it is more in line with that of the original installment, even managing to slightly surpass it as the highest-scored movie in the series.
With its early reviews, Insidious: Out of the Further has debuted with an approval rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s one percentage point higher than 2010’s Insidious, the franchise-launching film that is scored at 66%. All of the previous sequels have been unable to earn a “fresh” score of 60% or above, with 2018’s Insidious: The Last Key setting a new low at 35%. The new movie nearly doubling that number is an excellent start for the new horror flick heading into its wide release.
Insidious: Out of the Further Is the Franchise’s Highest-Rated Film
“A better soft reboot than a sixth franchise entry has any right to be, Insidious: Out of the Further delivers a popcorn-rattling ride full of fun, creative scares and serviceable human stakes,” IGN’s Tom Jorgensen said about the new film in a review.
For Dread Central, Daniel Kurland also wrote, “It’s a captivating mix of clever scares and a heartbreaking emotional foundation. Insidious: Out of the Further emerges as one of the franchise’s best entries and one of 2026’s best surprises.”
“More than any other Insidious sequel to date, it provides us with a smart, fun spin on the series that’s once again not beholden to anything,” io9 critic Germain Lussier added in a review. “It’s free to do as it pleases. The result is the best Insidious film since the original.”
As Nerdspin’s Zofia Wijaszka put it, “With a phenomenal cast, layered acting, and familial themes that go beyond what we see, Insidious: Out of the Further still keeps the ball of terror rolling.”
What Will Audiences Think About Insidious: Out of the Further?
Notably, it’s still Insidious: The Red Door that has the strongest Rotten Tomatoes audience score of the franchise at 49%. The original movie is at No. 2 at 62%. It won’t be known until after this weekend what audiences will think about Insidious: Out of the Further, but if it also sees a rise in filmgoer acclaim compared to the previous films, it could very well set a new high for the franchise in that regard as well.

The new film was directed by Jacob Chase (Come Play), who developed the story with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. James Wan and Leigh Whannell served as producers alongside Jason Blum and Oren Peli. It stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richarson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Laura Gordon, Island Austin, and returning franchise star Lin Shaye, who’s back as Elie Rainier.
Insidious: Out of the Further introduces a new family and a different supernatural premise, though Shaye’s return helps connect the sequel to the previous established mythology. It follows Gemma, a young mother raising her daughters in her childhood home when she discovers she can enter the Further, a supernatural realm with lost souls and demons. Her abilities allow her to bring things from the Further into the real world, and once the sinister entities in that dark world realize this, they take advantage of Gemma to cross over into reality.
Insidious: Out of the Further has its wide release in movie theaters on Aug. 21, 2026.
