Game of Thrones and the larger A Song of Ice and Fire universe are packed with unresolved mysteries that remain largely unexplored both in print and on screen, and arguably the most consequential of these lies in the ambiguous nature of the Old Gods. The Old Gods are referenced throughout George R.R. Martin’s seminal work, particularly in connection with the North, the First Men, the Children of the Forest, and the ancient Weirwood trees scattered across Westeros.
Despite their significance across the franchise, very little is known about what the Old Gods actually are. They have no names, there’s no “organized religion” per se, and no priesthood or anything, while worship of the Old Gods apparently predates nearly every surviving human institution in Westeros.
Further, Bran Stark reveals a very tangible connection with the Old Gods through greensight, his “traveling” through the weirwoods, and the strange preservation of memory across time. It’s a deeply mysterious and intentionally unexplained aspect of Martin’s work that definitely will be explored more thoroughly in future novels, but in the meantime, Game of Thrones fans can check out the upcoming release of Honor of the Old Gods, available August 24 (via GoTC).
Honor of the Old Gods is an upcoming Special Event in Game of Thrones: Conquest that’s scheduled to run from August 24 to August 31, 2026, as the finale of August’s broader History and Visions event arc. Warner Bros. Boston has so far revealed little about the event’s specific mechanics or rewards, with the August preview listing only its name and dates. Its title, however, clearly invokes the ancient religion practiced throughout the North and associated with the Children of the Forest, the Weirwood trees, etc.
Special Events are part of Conquest’s regular rotation of limited-time content, giving players temporary objectives and challenges often themed around characters, battles, locations, and lore from across the Game of Thrones universe, including content derived from House of the Dragon as well. These events can encompass PvE and PvP gameplay, crafting, resource gathering, and progression challenges while offering exclusive or limited rewards, depending on the specific event type.
If you haven’t had a chance to play yet, Game of Thrones: Conquest itself is Warner Bros. Games’ long-running free-to-play mobile strategy title, originally released in 2017. Players establish their own House in Westeros, develop a stronghold, raise armies and dragons, form alliances, and compete with other players for control of strategically important Seats of Power.
While Conquest may not be quite as exciting as an official Winds of Winter release announcement or a new spin-off series, it is a reliable source of unique content from the Game of Thrones extended universe, and comes highly rated among players on both Google Play and the App Store.
