A one-time Yellowstone star is going back to Montana.
Josh Holloway joined the cast of Taylor Sheridan’s epic neo-Western TV show in season 3, playing the unscrupulous investor Roarke, whose plans to take over Dutton land placed him at odds with John and the rest of the clan. But those schemes came to a premature end thanks to Rip Wheeler and his rattlesnake, bringing Roarke’s brief Yellowstone character arc to a brutal conclusion.
Now Holloway is journeying back to Yellowstone’s Montana landscapes in a different guise, playing a gunslinger who insists he may be educated but isn’t a gentleman, in a movie adaptation of Louis L’Amour’s classic novel Flint, a trailer for which has now been released exclusively via Collider ahead of the film’s premiere September 25 at the Nashville Film Festival.
The clip (which can be seen here) kicks off with some classically Western score, setting a dramatic mood that is matched by the imagery, which shows Holloway’s Kettleman returning by train to the Montana he left behind. Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven may come to mind for some as the clip shows more of Kettleman’s journey, with voice-over from Holloway himself, punctuated by bursts of violence, and brief glimpses of what appear to be flashbacks.
Things become increasingly complicated for Holloway’s character amid the rough-and-tumble of the frontier, as supporting characters are introduced and the film’s main conflict is teased, while the music picks up in intensity. Kettleman’s complex nature is hinted at in a dialog exchange during which he asks the question, “Can an educated man be a violent man?” Flint’s synopsis gives the gist, saying, “James Kettleman returns to the Montana frontier he once fled, taking the name of the notorious killer who raised him. In the crosshairs of a range war involving a female rancher, he is forced to decide what his ultimate legacy will be.”
