The Marvel Cinematic Universe celebrated its 18-year anniversary this year with the release of Iron Man, meaning the shared universe is old enough to vote. The series kicked off with the critically acclaimed Iron Man in May 2008, followed by The Incredible Hulk a month later. The second attempt at a solo Hulk movie was not as well received by audiences and critics, and notably had a troubled behind-the-scenes process involving star Edward Norton over the final cut. Until 2023’s The Marvels, The Incredible Hulk held the distinction as the lowest-grossing film in the MCU.
Speaking with Collider, director Louis Leterrier reflected on The Incredible Hulk and the reported darker cut of the film. “I did. I really did. There’s a darker cut. Longer, obviously. It’s not an hour, but it’s very interesting because The Incredible Hulk was the first movie sort of starting the MCU.” Leterrier reflected on how the movie helped lay the groundwork for the MCU, including cameos by other Marvel heroes, such as Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Tony Stark. He also discussed the infamous deleted opening scene that would have hinted at Captain America. Leterrier said:
“It was a little ahead of its time, so we didn’t do it. But Captain America was in it. Tony Stark was in it — he’s still in it. And the opening was actually quite interesting. It was set in the North Pole. It was cool. A little too dark…there were all these ideas that started many of the stories you’re following now, and that was in The Incredible Hulk.”
The Incredible Hulk had infamous behind-the-scenes production issues. Star Edward Norton clashed with Marvel Studios over the final cut of the movie, as the actor took a more hands-on approach, including an uncredited rewrite of the script. Norton and Leterrier wanted a more dramatic story, though following the mixed reaction to Ang Lee’s Hulk, Marvel Studios wanted a shorter, more action-packed Hulk film. In the end, Marvel Studios won out, with The Incredible Hulk having a runtime of 112 minutes (1 hour and 52 minutes). However, Edward Norton’s clashes with Marvel and threats not to promote the film ultimately led Marvel Studios to recast the role of Bruce Banner, with Mark Ruffalo taking over starting with The Avengers.
Most of the film’s character-centric deleted scenes were included in the movie’s home video release, along with the alternate opening that teased Captain America. The scene would be made canon in part by a line of dialogue in The Avengers, where Bruce Banner references “putting a bullet in my mouth, but the other guy spat it out.” However, the Hulk being responsible for unearthing Captain America’s frozen body in the ice was changed, as Captain America: The First Avenger established that the super-soldier was discovered in a downed HYDRA aircraft. Leterrier did hint that not all the deleted scenes were released to the public.
Likely due to the Hulk’s popularity with mainstream audiences at the time, Marvel Studios put much more of its shared-universe building into The Incredible Hulk than Iron Man. The movie’s Abomination storyline is the first hint at the super-soldier program that would be expanded upon in Captain America: The First Avenger and later in stories like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Thunderbolts*. In fact, starting in the Multiverse Saga, titles like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Captain America: Brave New World began to openly acknowledge The Incredible Hulk after years of the film often going overlooked in the MCU canon. Even if Leterrier’s cut of The Incredible Hulk is never released, the director did play a key role in shaping the MCU as audiences still enjoy to this day.
