Dear Marvel, what are you doing? For a studio that has had its fair share of forgettable projects (Secret Invasion, anyone?), it seems odd that such an explosive fan-favorite, namely, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been shelved for years now.
Shelved as in the long-awaited and highly-anticipated sequel — starring Simu Liu in his reprisal of Shang-Chi — has yet to receive a green light from Kevin Feige. It will also mark a half-decade between the premiere of the original film and Shang-Chi’s live-action return in Avengers: Doomsday this December, furthering the concern over Marvel’s [mis]handling of the character.
It’s to the point where Liu finds himself lobbying for a Shang-Chi sequel both online and whenever a microphone is put in front of him.
Simu Liu Still In the Dark About Shang-Chi Sequel
His most recent comment may have dropped the mic, though. It’s as clear and definitive as Liu has ever been when asked about the possibility of Shang-Chi 2 finally making its way to audiences starved for more of the character’s story.
Speaking from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con during the Avengers: Doomsday panel — hot off of his appearance in the latest trailer that sees him battling Gambit (Channing Tatum) in Professor Xavier’s mansion — Liu is almost literally pleading for a Shang-Chi follow-up film.
“I mean, your guess is as good as mine,” he admitted to Variety. “I will say this: the only reason people even ask about a sequel is because there are so many incredible fans that loved the first one so much, and I will never, ever stop being the most grateful for all of those people. I was reminded of it again when we were in Hall H. It was such an atmosphere of joy. When you have people waiting over 30 hours in line just to be there with us — I wanted to reach out and touch every single one of them to say, ‘Thank you.'”
But wait, there’s more.
Shang-Chi Actor: ‘I’d Crawl Across Glass to Get a Sequel’ From Marvel
To put it plainly, it’s a terrible look for Marvel Studios to have a very obvious hit on their hands whilst twiddling their thumbs over it. Such is the case for Shang-Chi 2 — droves of fans demanding it while, simultaneously, the lead actor continuosly pounds the table to gain the studio attention needed to bring it to fruition.
“[The fans are] the reason I’m here, and the reason why we’re even throwing words like ‘sequel’ around,” Liu added before delivering a mic drop. “Whenever and wherever the call comes, I would crawl through a mile of broken glass on my bare hands to do it, because I know how much this movie means to me. But, more importantly, I know how much this movie means to the fans that loved it.”
He continued: “I’m hoping that’s taken metaphorically but, if it has to be literal, I would be open.”
